Sirmione
The Latin poet Catullus, who was the first one to celebrate these places, their power and their unique beauty in verse, built his large and very rich summer residence on the tip of the peninsula. Considered one of the most elegant thermal resorts of northern Italy, Sirmione has very much to offer: from the Grotte of Catullo (the ruins of his ancient villa), to the ancient colonnades, houses and churches. Also worth a visit are the small harbor and the medieval Scaligero castle, which rises from the waters of Lake Garda like an ancient warrior in arms. Sirmione, "the romantic," is also one of the places better suited to artists and musicians for expressing their art: ateliers, boutiques and small handcraft shops decorate the town like a garden of roses in May. In addition, the very famous opera singer Maria Callas made Sirmione her residence for years. Her wonderful villa is located besides the Grotte of Catullo.
